David Cameron said he was "devastated" to hear of the Mr Shale's death.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said Mr Shale was a "close and valued friend" and a "big rock" in his life.

Mr Shale, who was the party chairman in Mr Cameron’s Witney constituency, was featured in an article in today's Mail on Sunday quoting him as saying there was little reason to join the Conservative party.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis said police had told him it was 'a suicide situation' but offcially officers say it is too early to say.

Eavis said: “I'm told it was a suicide situation in the early hours of this morning. It was in the Winnebago area. It's very very sad - I can't say too much about it.”

Inspector Chris Morgan said: “We are still working on establishing a cause of death.”
