Cartoon of Minnie Mouse wearing face veil sparks Muslim backlash

E-mail Print PDF

Cminnie-and-mickey-mouseARTOONS of Mickey Mouse with a beard and Minnie Mouse wearing the niqab face veil have stirred up fury among hard-line Muslims.

And the tough-talking Islamists have launched online campaigns calling for Muslims to boycott the mobile phone firm which is using the cartoons in an advertisement.

The threat is serious enough to have seen shares in the telecoms firms Mobinil and Orascom Telecom, plummet on the Egyptian stock exchange.

The pictures were posted online by Egyptian Christian businessman and politician Naguib Sawiris to advertise his telecoms firm Mobinil.

But ultra-conservative Muslims, known as Salafis, called the cartoon 'a mockery of Islam'. Some have even threatened to cut out Sawiris tongue.

The Salafis launched campaigns on Facebook and Twitter calling for a boycott of Mobinil.

Sawiris is founder of the liberal Free Egyptians Party which believes in a secular Egypt.

After noting that the cartoon had seemingly caused offence Mr Sawiris used Twitter to say: “I apologise for those who don't take this as a joke; I just thought it was a funny picture; no disrespect meant. I am sorry.”

Several Facebook groups including one called 'We are joking Sawiris', have ammassed 60,000 followers.

A sinister message on  'We are joking Sawiris' reads: “If you are really a Muslim, and you love your religion, boycott his projects.

“We have to cut out the tongue of any person who attacks our religion.”
