crucifixionA DEVOUT Christian found nailed to a cross and wearing a crown of thorns in an apparent re-creation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is believed to have committed suicide.

Police say the 58-year-old, who was found in an abandoned quarry in South Korea wearing only underwear and with a stab wound in his side, carried out the bizarre suicide unaided.

Officers, who only gave the victim's surname as Kim, said initial investigations had found that he nailed his feet to the cross, secured his neck with nylon rope and stabbed himself in the side.

He is then believed to have drilled holes in his hands and slipped them over nails on the cross. Investigating officers said he had left detailed notes planning his elaborate death and that his "deep religious faith" may have helped him endure "immense pain".

Officials at Gyeongbuk provincial police agency said officers had even successfully re-staged some elements of the crucifixion and concluded that it was possible to stage a crucifixion unaided.

A post-mortem indicated he died of blood loss from the stab wound and suffocation. It is unknown how long he would have taken to die.
