Strike-in-LondonEMERGENCY services were critically undermanned today as nine out of ten '999' police call handlers went on strike.

The staff joined the 24-hour walkout by up to 750,000 public servants, aimed at crippling public services.

Sir Paul Stephenson, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, called the absence of 999 staff “concerning.”

In London police were braced for violent clashes as 'anarchist' groups joined legitimate protests which threatened to turn ugly.

Snatch squads of officers in London have pulled about 15 masked men and women from crowds near Lincoln's Inn.
Outside London 12,000 schools are closed and there have been marches across the country.

In Birmingham and estimated 10,000 protesters took to the streets.
