Tiger CubAN ALLEGED animal smuggler attempted to sneak a live tiger cub out of Thailand by carrying it in a suitcase of soft toys.

The two-month-old cub had been sedated and thrown in a case with a selection of Chinese-made soft-toy tigers.

A baby's milk feeding bottle was also recovered.

However, a standard baggage X-Ray triggered the suspicions of security staff at Bangkok Airport and the woman, called Piyawan Palasarn, was arrested.

She was on her way to Iran, where exotic pets are highly prized.

Palasarn now faces a possible four year jail term and a $1300 fine.

Chris Shepherd, deputy regional director of anti-smuggling organisation 'Traffic South East Asia' said he hoped tough penalties would continue to be imposed on would-be animal traffickers.

He added: “If people are trying to smuggle live tigers in their check-in luggage they obviously think wildlife smuggling is something easy to get away with and do not fear reprimand. Only sustained pressure on wildlife traffickers and serious penalties can change that.”
