MORE than 500 live lobsters set to be thermidored at high class US restaurants have been set free by Buddhists.
The lobster liberation took place when the 30 Buddhists headed to a Massachusetts fishing district and bought 600 pounds of lobster from a seafood wholesaler.
They silently blessed the lobsters with holy water, clipped the bands binding their claws and one by one, released them into the Atlantic ocean.
The liberation was to mark 'Wheel Turning Day' – one of the biggest celebrations in the Buddhist calendar.
Buddhists believed that this sacred day brings special rewards to those who do good deeds, and the universal payback for positive action is multiplied many times over.
