Soldiers-in-AfghanistanA BRITISH soldier who encouraged schoolgirls to text him naked pics while on the Afghanistan frontline has been jailed.

Ronald Baird, 31, talked to girls as young as 13 asking them to undress on webcam and to text him nude photos, a court heard.

He was rumbled when the mother of one girl found some of his sexually explicit messages on her daughter's Facebook page and Military Police moved in.   The Territorial Army radio operator — known as RJ — encouraged three girls aged between 13 and 15 to send naked pictures to his phone.   Baird, from Daventry, Northants, UK, was convicted of nine counts of inciting girls to engage in sexual activity and sentenced to four years behind bars.

Scott Brady, prosecuting, said: “This all came to light on Friday, November 16, 2009, when a girl’s mother was looking at the family’s computer and discovered her daughter had forgotten to log out of her Facebook account. She saw messages from RJ which appeared to absolutely horrify her.

“The messages were about quite specific sexual matters.”

Recorder Adrian Redgrave QC, who jailed him, added an extended licence making him liable to recall to prison until 2019. He will also be on the sex offenders’ register for life and will be banned indefinitely from unsupervised contact with children.

The Recorder said: “The conduct which you incited them, encouraged them to engage in, involved penetrative sex as well as nude photos and other types of sexual activity. Conduct involving penetrative sex falls into the highest bracket indicated by the Sentencing Council.

“It is the court’s duty to pay heed to that guidance.

“The only mitigating feature and it is one your learned counsel has emphasised is you did not go on to engage in the sexual activity that you were encouraging these girls to engage in.”
