Diet soda can help dieters shed 5 percent bodyweight in 26 weeks - study

diet-cokeSWITCHING from normal soda to diet soda can help dieters lose up to five per cent of their body weight in just six months.

New research shows the simple technique will rid the average body of 5lbs of fat.

The study, due to appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compared weight loss for 318 overweight or obese people.

Volunteers were divided into three groups - one group switched from calorie-laden beverages to diet soft drinks, the next switched to water, while the third group did not change their drinks and just received general information about healthy choices that could lead to weight loss.

The groups were monitored across six months and while all three experienced small reductions in weight and waist circumference, the group who switched to calorie-free beverages were twice as likely to lose five percent or more of their body weight than those who didn't change their drinks.

Professor Deborah Tate, study author at the University of North Carolina, said: “Substituting non-caloric beverages - whether it’s water, diet soft drinks or something else - can be a clear and simple change for people who want to lose or maintain weight.

“If this were done on a large scale, it could significantly reduce the increasing public health problem of obesity.”
