FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a major blaze in central London.

 Smoke is billowing hundreds of feet into the air a the fire rips through a 10-storey apartment development in The Strand, in the city.

More than 75 firefighters and 15 pumps are at the blaze which broke out at about 9.30am today.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the fire took hold of about a quarter of the 100sq m (1,076sq ft) roof of the building.

There were no reports of injuries.

The Strand, in London, connects Trafalgar Square and Fleet Street. It is the home of Charing Cross railway station, Somerset House, the Royal Courts of Justice and West End theatres like the Aldwych Theatre and the Vaudeville Theatre.
