German-airship-fireAN AIRSHIP has exploded in mid-air killing the pilot – but only after his heroic actions saved the lives of his passengers.

The disaster struck at Reichelsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, on Sunday, when a Goodyear blimp flown by  Australian pilot Michael Nerandzic caught fire.

But before the catastrophic explosion Mr Nerandzic flew the blimp to ground level so his three passengers could jump for their lives.

The aircraft then rose 50 meters and exploded, killing the pilot. His body was found still at the controls and Mr Nerandzic was being hailed a hero today.
His widow, Lyndy Nerandzic, said: “When there was trouble on the airship he brought it down to as low as he could to let the passengers jump out and he stayed at the controls.

“As soon as they jumped out of course, being an airship, he knew it would rise up and it did.

"They found him still at the controls when it crashed. He also steered it away from his ground crew.”
