Batgirl-DC-ComicsFEMALE comic book superhero Batgirl is to walk again – 20 years after she was confined to a wheelchair by The Joker.

Publishers DC Comics have announced that Batgirl character Barbara Gordon, who was shot through the spine by the Joker in the 1988 story The Killing Joke, is to regain the use of her legs.

She will dispense with the wheelchair and be back to full mobility as part of a title relaunch.

Some fans have complained DC bosses are removing one of the very few disabled superheroes.

Batgirl writer Gail Simone said her character had been a wheelchair bound computer-hacking expert since the injury but added: “She's been removed from the action and danger for a long time.

“With this relaunch she is still very much Barbara but she can reclaim part of her history and legacy with modern stories - in her own book and elsewhere - drawn by some wonderful artists."
