Clothing you can 'print out' direct from the internet becomes a reality

3D-bikiniIMAGINE not only being able to select an item of clothing from the internet but then having it 'printed' out, ready to wear immediately.

That's the idea behind this new bikini which uses 3D printing technologies to designer's two-dimensional idea into a fully formed wearable reality in seconds.

The Shapeways bikini - made in partnership with Continuum Fashion - is already available to buy – but the specialist printers required are still a long way from being available for domestic use.

The principle however has clearly been proved, and it may offer a glimpse of the future.

The technique is complex though in simple terms it operates in a similar way to an inkjet printer but instead of laying down a layer of ink it lays down a layer of polymer which is then built up  with each pass to comply with the template.

And while the method remains cutting edge, so does the price.

A complete bikini (each component is individually priced) will set you back about £167.

Mary Haung, at Continuum Fashion, said: “The bikini's design fundamentally reflects the beautiful intricacy possible with 3D printing, as well as the technical challenges of creating a flexible surface out of the solid nylon.”
