ipod-nanoFIRST generation iPod Nanos are being recalled by Apple over fears their batteries can burst into flames.

And the technology giant is offering free replacements to all those affected – including the trusty )or maybe not) six year old Nano providing the tunes are wownews Towers.

Apple said that the first generation iPod Nano, which was sold between September 2005 and December 2006, was the only model being recalled.

Unfortunately the replacement will not be an upgrade but a like-for-like swap and it will take approximately six weeks to arrive.

Some online cynics have suggested hanging on to the old one and suing the world's richest corporation Apple if the Nano explodes!

Apple released a statement confirming the emergency recall. It said: “Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod Nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod Nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

“This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.”

Apple has instructed customers to go to the iPod Nano (1st generation) Replacement Programme support page, to confirm if their model is eligible for the recall.
